REINVENTION OF THE SMALL SCALE FAMILY FARM

Our Story

Bryson Family Farm was founded in August, 2015. The propery was once the home of the Iona baseball field but was later used for commercial farming consisting mainly of soybean crops at the time we purchased it. We had aimed to start slow but farming has a way of consuming your every thought and quickly our 14 acre property has grown to include over 200 animals in the busy season. We currently house chickens [layers, meat birds and purebred dual purpose breeds], geese, a horse, pony and sheep. Over the years the farm has included ducks, turkeys, pheasants, pigs and a cow. Farming is much more than a job it is a lifestyle that requires  life long learning. It is filled with many challenged but even more rewards, you can follow our journey on our Facebook page!

Our Mission

It is our mission to create a sustainable and diverse farmstead, to produce quality food, and to support and help grow our local community. We are advocates for sustainable agricutlure and environmentally friendly practices. We strive to be the modern, updated version of the small scale family farm.

What is sustainable agriculture? By definition sustainable agriculture is a type of agriculture that focuses on producing long-term crops and livestock while having minimal effects on the environment. This type of agriculture tries to find a good balance between the need for food production and the preservation of the ecological system within the environment.

In addition to producing food, there are several overall goals associated with sustainable agriculture, including conserving water, reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides, and promoting biodiversity in crops grown and the ecosystem. Sustainable agriculture also focuses on maintaining economic stability of farms and helping farmers improve their techniques and quality of life.

We are committed to educating and encouraging others to seek their own sustainable life. If you have questions or are curious about sustainable agriculture feel free to reach out!

Chicken

Our chickens are free range pasture raised.
By definition free range is: (of livestock, especially poultry) kept in natural conditions, with freedom of movement (of eggs) produced by birds reared under natural conditions.
By definition pasture raised is: a sustainable agriculture technique that calls for the raising of laying chickens and meat chickens (broilers) on pasture, as opposed to indoor confinement

This means that all chickens live in an enclosed space that gives ample room for them to move freely and act as chickens should raised on pasture. They are kept in what we call a ‘chicken tractor’ to protect them from predators [racooons, fox and coyotes]. They get moved to new grass each day while keeps them clean and healthy and allows them to forage grass and bugs adding to their flavour and nutritional value. In raising our chickens this way we prevent the need for artificial fertilizers on our fields as the chickens naturally fertilize each day. This is a labour entensive process but one that increases the enrichment of the chickens lives and improves our soil quality!
